“What inspired you to become a pastor? ”
I have known I wanted to be a pastor since I was 14 years old. I didn’t grow up going to church; I started going to church because a friend invited me to attend Confirmation classes. I fell in love with the stories of Jesus in the Gospels. My call is deeply rooted in the example Jesus set for us, of loving God with everything that I am; which convicts me to love and serve my neighbor as myself. I am the first person in my family to go to Seminary, and the first pastor. I was ordained in 2018 and have served in Minnesota and Texas. Tokyo Lutheran will be my third call.
“What challenges do you want to take on in your missionary work in Japan?”
I am so looking forward to getting to know the entire congregation at Tokyo Lutheran Church and hearing from them what they are excited about or dreaming of for ministry, worship, and life together. I am so honored and thankful to have been called to accompany the congregation in their journey with Jesus. If the congregation is open to it, I’d be very curious to discern together how we could respond to some of the food and housing insecurity issues I’ve been hearing about in Tokyo. Additionally, I would love to meet other congregations in the JELC and hear about their faith-filled work.
“What is your favorite Bible verse?”
One of my all-time favorite Bible verses is one I rarely get to preach on (it’s usually only read on Christmas Day, every few years) John 1:4
“Why did you choose that scripture? ”
It is a powerful testimony to the power of Jesus’ love for His people—“what has come into being through Him was life. And the life was the light of all people.“ Especially during difficult times, I try to focus on light—where I see it, where it meets me. Even if there’s only glimmers of it. It reminds me of Jesus’ enduring presence. If I have life in me, I have Him—and through His life, there will always be light that shines upon my path. I draw courage and comfort from the truth that nothing can overcome His light. It shines all the brighter in the dark. These are powerful words for us to hold onto; and a profound promise from God that no matter where life takes us—we will always have light through the love and grace of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
